Your friendly Chiropractor in Chandler AZ, Dr. Dan Rae, is back at the computer today to finish up with Migraines.  In my previous post we reviewed that Classic Migraine with it different subcategories, and today we will finish up with the Common Migraine.

The Common Migraine is similar to that of the Classic Migraine; however, one of the major distinguishing factor that differentiate the two is the fact that suffer from the Common Migraine do not experience aura (visual disturbances) prior to the Migraine, which occurs with the Classic Migraine.  The Common Migraine accounts for the vast majority of all Migraine Headaches at 80% to 85%.  It has been determined that blood flow to the brain and the blood volume to the brain is reduced during the during the headache phase.  However, the brains ability to metabolize and extract oxygen from the blood is unaffected.

These individuals are generally female, and they come into my office complaining of one-sided, pulsatile headaches that are recurrent, having begun in her late teens or early twenties.  There are no visual problems or other neurologic signs that are associated with the Classic Migraine.  The headache is quite sever, but the individual is usually able to continue performing daily activities.  There is associated nausea and vomiting, with vomiting occasionally providing relief from the headache.

These individual are treated no different than those individuals who suffer from Classic Migraine.  Chiropractic Care with nutritional and herbal supplementation is highly recommended.  Common supplements include feverfew, 5-HTP, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, calcium and vitamin D, and riboflavin.  Supplementation prior to menses may prevent women’s Menstrual Migraines.
