Your friendly Chiropractor in Chandler AZ, Dr. Dan Rae, is back at the computer trying to get this article written in between patients.  Today, I will be writing about an issues that is affecting more and more people all the time, and it is a condition know as Postural Syndrome or Upper Crossed Syndrome.  This is some that most of us have never heard of, but we definitely recognize it when we see it as depicted in the image below.

With this condition there becomes a natural imbalance between the muscles in the chest and the muscles of the upper back that is often accentuated by different work postures that emphasize a “hunched”, forward-head position.  The large tight muscles such as the pectorals become shortened over time in adapting to the position, with associated weakness and constant strain of the muscles of the upper back.  The image below by Erik Dalton gives a good view of this muscular imbalance.

These individuals will come into my office with a constant aching pain in the middle and upper back regions, which is generally alleviated by activity and made worse by working at a desk.

Treatment for this condition is fairly simple, but it requires a consistent concerted effort on the part of the patient.  In my office we start by treating this condition with a combination of chiropractic manipulation and a series of soft-tissue therapies known as Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston Technique to lengthen the chronically shortened muscles of the chest and subocciptal region combined with strengthening exercises for the weakened muscles of the upper back and neck flexors.  Kinesiology Tape is also applied as a postural support.

If the Kinesiology Tape is successful, the patient is transitioned into a Posture Shirt by Intelliskin as seen in the image below.

We have seen fantastic results with our Postural Syndrome patients.  Call us today (480) 366-4041.  We can Help!
